Nyesom Wike says litigating in appellate courts forged his respect for higher‑court adjudication and praises Emmanuel C. Ukala’s new manual as a must‑use tool for lawyers.

Context On Wednesday in Abuja, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike addressed a gathering at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre. The event launched “Ukala’s Manual on Appellate Practice,” a guide aimed at lawyers handling appeals.

Key Facts Wike told the audience that appearing repeatedly as a party in appellate disputes gave him a “direct benefit” from the work done at that level. He said the experience taught him the discipline, rigor and institutional value of appellate adjudication. The minister contrasted his role as litigant with that of counsel, noting that appeals demand precise, structured reasoning and a firm grasp of both substantive and procedural law.

He also disclosed that his legal career began at Emmanuel Ukala’s law firm, where he acquired foundational values that still shape his public service. Those early lessons, he said, continue to influence his approach to governance and law.

Wike endorsed the manual, describing it as a practical guide rather than a purely academic text. He highlighted its coverage of notices, grounds of appeal, record compilation, interlocutory applications, briefs of argument and both written and oral advocacy. He warned that the book will not sit idle on a shelf; it will be consulted when lawyers “must get it right.”

The launch attracted senior judiciary figures, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the President of the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court justices, members of the Body of Benchers and Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

What It Means Wike’s remarks underscore the importance of appellate experience for legal professionals and signal official support for practical training resources. By linking his own career trajectory to the manual, he positions the book as a bridge between theory and courtroom reality. Young lawyers may feel pressure to move beyond celebration and integrate the guide into daily practice, potentially raising the overall quality of appellate advocacy in Nigeria.

Looking ahead, watch how law schools and bar associations incorporate the manual into curricula and continuing‑education programs.
