Blomfield, a General Partner at Y Combinator, shared his view in a recent discussion on building AI‑native companies. He explained that AI‑native firms are built around artificial intelligence from the ground up, using the technology to continuously adapt and improve their operations. In contrast, traditional companies depend on a chain of command where information moves up and down a fixed hierarchy of managers.

He compared that structure to the Roman legion, noting its strict, top‑down organization where soldiers followed orders through a rigid line of authority. Blomfield said this model worked when humans were the only coordination mechanism, but AI now can process information and make decisions faster than any human chain.
