US Space Command Warns Russia’s Nivelir Anti‑Satellite System Is Now Operational

The US Space Command confirms Russia's Nivelir anti-satellite system is now operational, capable of targeting US national security satellites. This marks a significant shift in space defense capabilities.

Russia developed a space weapon system known as Nivelir, designed to intercept or disable other satellites in orbit. This program involves what US officials describe as “nesting doll” satellites, where a larger craft deploys smaller, more agile spacecraft. These smaller objects can then perform independent maneuvers, including approaching other satellites.

Russia conducted its first Nivelir test mission in 2013, with these satellites observed creeping near US spy satellites as early as 2019. One test in 2020 involved a Nivelir satellite lobbing a high-velocity mystery object, assessed by analysts as a potential projectile weapon.

US officials now confirm that Russia's Nivelir anti-satellite system is operational. General Stephen Whiting, commander of US Space Command, stated that Russia is deploying a space weapon system capable of reaching critical US national security satellites. The newest suspected Nivelir satellite launched in May from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia.

Its launch timing specifically aligned with the orbital plane of a US National Reconnaissance Office spy satellite, USA 338 Keyhole-class optical. These precise orbital synchronizations enable close proximity operations. This precise timing indicates a strategic intent for the Nivelir system.

The operational status of the Nivelir system signals an escalation in military capabilities within space. It means Russia possesses a direct method to disrupt or destroy assets vital to US national security, including intelligence and communication satellites. This development intensifies the focus on protecting space-based infrastructure, which underpins modern military and civilian operations.
