Tim Cook will step down as Apple CEO on September 1, with John Ternus assuming the role, while Cook transitions to executive chairman. This leadership change marks the end of Cook's transformative 13-year CEO tenure, during which Apple experienced significant growth.
Apple CEO Tim Cook will resign from his position, effective September 1. John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, will succeed Cook as the company's new chief executive. Cook will continue to contribute to Apple in the newly created role of executive chairman.
Cook assumed the CEO role in 2011, following the passing of co-founder Steve Jobs. His nearly 13-year leadership saw Apple expand its product ecosystem significantly, introducing new categories such as the Apple Watch, AirPods, and most recently, the Apple Vision Pro.
Under Cook's direction, Apple experienced substantial financial growth. The company's market capitalization, which is the total value of its outstanding shares, expanded from approximately $350 billion to $4 trillion. This represents an increase exceeding 1,000% during his tenure.
Cook affirmed his experience, stating, "It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company." Ternus, an Apple veteran of 25 years, has played a critical role in developing and introducing key products across lines including iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch.
The appointment of Ternus, a seasoned engineer and product leader, signals a continuation of Apple's emphasis on integrated hardware and software innovation. Ternus has held the senior vice president of hardware engineering position since 2021, overseeing the design and development of numerous product generations.
Cook's new role as executive chairman allows for his continued involvement in strategic decisions and engagements with global policymakers. This transition structure is similar to those observed in other major technology firms, where former CEOs maintain influence. The industry will closely observe how Ternus navigates Apple's future product roadmap, global market dynamics, and competitive landscape. This shift represents a significant leadership change for one of the world's most valuable companies.
