New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has stepped away from the team indefinitely to seek counseling and be with his family, missing a critical portion of the NFL Draft. This move follows a period of public scrutiny regarding his conduct.

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has committed to an indefinite leave, beginning this weekend, to seek counseling and attend to his family. This decision directly follows a period of public scrutiny concerning his relationship with former NFL reporter Dianna Russini.

Reports surfaced detailing photographs of Vrabel and Russini, who was then with The Athletic, in Sedona, Arizona. These images, captured at an adults-only resort, depicted the two in various settings, including a pool, hot tub, and bar, and showed them holding hands and embracing. Both individuals, who are married, denied any wrongdoing.

The Athletic launched an investigation into Russini's conduct, which concluded with her resignation from the publication. Vrabel subsequently held private discussions with his family, the Patriots' ownership, and his players regarding the situation.

Vrabel will miss the entirety of Saturday’s NFL Draft proceedings, a day when rounds 4 through 7 are conducted. The Patriots hold eight picks in these late rounds, including two in the fourth round. Club executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf, alongside vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden, will manage the draft operations.

Vrabel stated his commitment to this personal leave, emphasizing, "I promised my family, this organization and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can possibly give them." He detailed his plan to seek counseling starting this weekend, citing it as a step he would advise any player to take for self-improvement.

Vrabel and his wife, Jennifer, have been married since 1999. The counseling is a reported effort to improve his personal well-being and marital stability, with plans for him to be with his family outside of Massachusetts.

The timing of Vrabel’s departure coincides with the start of the Patriots’ offseason program this week, which will continue next week. His absence raises questions about the team's leadership during crucial early preparations. Observers will monitor Vrabel's return and its impact on the team's operational stability as the offseason progresses.
