NMA Delegates Suspend President Audu, Reverse Candidate Disqualification, Install Caretaker Committee

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its National President, Prof. Bala Audu, over alleged constitutional violations and high-handed conduct. An Emergency Delegates Meeting reversed candidate disqualifications and installed a caretaker committee.

The Nigerian Medical Association, Nigeria's primary professional body for medical doctors, is currently undergoing significant internal governance shifts. These developments occurred just ahead of the association's upcoming national elections.

Members voted to suspend National President Prof. Bala Audu. This action stemmed from alleged constitutional violations and high-handed conduct during his tenure. The accusations centered on unilateral decisions concerning electoral processes.

An Emergency Delegates Meeting in Abuja was the venue for these decisions. The assembly drew 63 delegates, including chairmen and secretaries, from 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This broad representation underscored the gravity of the discussions.

A central resolution involved reversing the disqualification of six candidates from the forthcoming national elections. The National Officers Committee (NOC), which Prof. Audu headed, had previously disqualified these individuals, citing incomplete documentation. Delegates rejected this rationale, asserting it violated established NMA constitutional norms.

The meeting also moved to establish a caretaker committee. This interim body, led by former Secretary-General Dr. Ekpe Phillips, will now oversee the NMA's day-to-day operations. Its mandate includes managing affairs until the new elections are complete and initiating disciplinary actions against Prof. Audu and the NOC if warranted.

Dr. Emeka Ayogu, Chairman of NMA-FCT, publicly supported the delegates' actions. He stated the association's imperative to protect members' welfare and uphold due process. Dr. Ayogu emphasized that decisive intervention became necessary to safeguard these core principles.

This period represents a critical juncture for the NMA's internal democracy and leadership stability. The delegates' actions directly address concerns over procedural fairness and constitutional adherence. The association's ability to execute a smooth transition and restore unity will now be a key indicator.
