Nigerian Navy's 70th Anniversary Aid Reaches Over 300 Widows in Niger Delta

The Nigerian Naval Ship (NNS Delta) hosted the outreach in Warri on Saturday, preceding the event with a Jummat service at its mosque. The programme formed part of the Navy’s anniversary celebrations, which have included parades, exhibitions and community engagements across the country. The packages included bags of rice, garri, vegetable oil, wrappers and other household supplies. Organisers said they chose to honour the families of fallen service members as a way to recognise the personal cost of seven decades of maritime security.

NNS Delta provided aid to over 300 widows drawn from military, paramilitary and civilian communities in the Niger Delta during the anniversary activities. The Navy commander stated that trust is built when the force reaches out and honours struggling families, rather than only appearing during raids. The Delta State Commissioner’s representative said the outreach demonstrated that pain, poverty and loss affect all social classes and professions equally.

Officials framed the distribution as a concrete expression of the Navy’s duty to neighbours, citing religious teachings on generosity. By extending aid beyond military circles, the Navy aims to weaken the perception that it engages communities only during enforcement operations.
