Mexico launches Africa Week 2026, announces new Kenyan and Ghanaian embassies, and calls for South‑South cooperation in education, health, innovation and agrotechnology.

Africa Week 2026 inaugurated May 18 at Mexico's Foreign Ministry, building on relaunch in 2025. Secretary Roberto Velasco Alvarez said the initiative deepens political, economic, academic and cultural ties with Africa.

He urged a South‑South development cooperation agenda that shares knowledge and best practices in education, health, innovation and agrotechnology, saying such exchange benefits both regions. This call echoes Mexico's broader strategy to position itself as a bridge between Latin America and Africa.

Mexico will open embassies in Kenya and Ghana later this year, expanding its diplomatic footprint on the continent. The new missions will handle consular services, trade promotion and cultural outreach.

In addition, Mexico will host several African national teams for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including the opening match against South Africa at Estadio Azteca. The tournament is expected to draw thousands of visitors, creating opportunities for people‑to‑people engagement.

Africa Week runs from May 18 to May 28 and features a business forum with panels on Mexican business experiences in Africa, technological innovation and financial inclusion, and renewable energy and rare minerals. An academic seminar, a film series titled "Africa and the Afro‑descendant Diaspora on Screen," and a panel on Afro‑Mexican voices in foreign policy round out the program.

The initiative underscores Mexico's shift toward viewing Africa as a strategic partner, aligning diplomatic openings with trade, education and cultural projects. By coupling embassy launches with a high‑profile sporting event, the government aims to raise awareness and stimulate investment.

Watch for the signing of cooperation agreements during the week and the operational launch of the Kenyan and Ghanaian embassies later in 2026.
