Bayern's Record Chase Meets Augsburg's Home Test in Bavarian Derby

Robin Fellhauer scored after 60 seconds. Rodrigo Ribeiro restored the lead on 64 minutes. Bayern München, 70% of the ball and 5.02 expected goals to Augsburg's 2.37, needed a Nathaniel Brown finish on 81 minutes to leave the WWK Arena with a 2-2 draw.

Augsburg lined up in a 3-4-2-1, Bayern in a 4-2-3-1. The shapes framed everything that followed: a back three absorbing pressure, a front two drifting into the channels, and a Bayern side that spent the afternoon camped in the final third without ever fully closing the door.

Fellhauer's First Minute and the Shape of the Match

Fellhauer's opener arrived in the first minute of regular play, a right-footed finish worth 0.82 xG — the highest-quality chance Augsburg created all afternoon. It set the terms immediately: Bayern would have the ball, Augsburg would have the moments.

By half-time the pattern was already clear. Bayern held 66% possession, took 11 shots to Augsburg's seven, and built 1.86 xG to the hosts' 1.48. Augsburg won 27 duels to Bayern's 17 across the first 45, and picked up two yellow cards doing it. The 3-4-2-1 was doing its job — squeezing the central lanes, forcing Bayern wide, and turning every regain into a direct counter.

Ismael Saibari was Bayern's most persistent threat before the break, and he carried that into the second half. On 55 minutes he finished a Harry Kane assist with a right-footed strike worth 0.52 xG. It was the goal his afternoon deserved: 1.25 xG across the match, the highest individual figure on either side.

Ribeiro Restores the Lead, Brown Rescues Bayern

Augsburg's response took nine minutes. Rodrigo Ribeiro, on a 0.68 xG chance, finished left-footed on 64 to make it 2-1. No assist. No build-up worth describing. A 3-4-2-1 that had spent an hour defending suddenly had a second goal and a genuine claim on the result.

Bayern's second half was a siege. 74% possession, 18 shots to five, 39 box touches to 12, 3.16 xG to 0.89. Augsburg's xG after the break was 0.89 — all of it open play, none from set pieces. The hosts defended their box with a back three and a midfield four that never stopped running, and for 17 minutes after Ribeiro's goal it looked like it might be enough.

Then Kane found Brown on 81. Bayern's second equaliser, and the striker's second assist of the afternoon. Kane finished the match with 1.55 xG and no goals — the most striking individual line of a game that refused to reward the obvious.

Expected goals (xG) by half

Bayern München's xG went from 1.86 in the first half to 3.16 in the second.

What the Numbers Say About the Result

Bayern's full-time ledger reads 29 shots, 10 on target, 63 box touches, 583 accurate passes at 90%, and 5.02 xG. Augsburg's reads 12 shots, five on target, 24 box touches, 214 accurate passes at 75%, and 2.37 xG. On chance quality, this was not close. On the scoreboard, it was.

Augsburg's 3-4-2-1 gave them a platform: 47 duels won to Bayern's 42, 10 fouls to six, three yellow cards to none. They scored from their two best chances of the match — Fellhauer's 0.82 xG and Ribeiro's 0.68 — and conceded from two of Bayern's six big chances. That is the margin between a famous win and a hard-earned draw.

Michael Olise finished with 0.16 xG, a quiet afternoon by his standards. Saibari's 1.25 xG and one goal made him Bayern's leading individual performer. Kane's two assists without a goal will read strangely against his 1.55 xG, but it was his pass that kept Bayern unbeaten on the day.

For Augsburg, the shape held, the duels went their way, and the two goals came from the two players the brief flagged. For Bayern, 70% possession and 5.02 xG produced a point. Both of those things are true, and the scoreline is the only one that counts.
