Aeralis, the UK firm developing a jet trainer to replace the Red Arrows' Hawks, entered administration, putting about 30 jobs at risk now and casting doubt on a projected 4,000-job, £600 million-a-year export programme.

Aeralis said it could design and build a new trainer in the UK. It hoped the Ministry of Defence would award it a contract to replace the Hawk jets used by the Red Arrows before 2030. The firm noted it needed government backing to move from digital designs to production.

Administrators confirmed Aeralis entered administration, resulting in roughly 30 job losses. The Ministry of Defence said the fast jet trainer programme continues and no final procurement decisions have been made. Aeralis had projected the programme would create 4,000 UK jobs and generate £600 million in yearly exports.

The immediate loss of about 30 jobs affects staff at Aeralis sites in Ayrshire and elsewhere.

The collapse removes a possible domestic source for the next trainer, leaving the MoD to consider existing options such as the BAE Systems-Boeing-Saab T-7 or Leonardo's M-346.

Analysts warn that without a clear defence investment plan, UK aerospace firms face continued funding uncertainty.

The administration process will now explore whether any assets or intellectual property can be preserved for a future buyer.

Watch for the Ministry of Defence's forthcoming defence investment plan announcement and any updates on competing trainer bids that could shape the Red Arrows' replacement timeline.
