The claim
“24 mostly Democratic-led states and two small businesses filed lawsuits against the Trump administration challenging tariffs that took effect on 24 February.”
Coverage of legal challenges to the 10% global tariffs Trump imposed under Section 122 after the Supreme Court struck down his emergency tariffs.
Our verdict
Mostly True
A coalition of 24 states sued over the Section 122 tariffs, and two small businesses filed a separate suit days later; both target tariffs in force since 24 February 2026.
What we found
After the Supreme Court struck down the emergency-powers tariffs on 20 February 2026, Trump imposed 10% global tariffs from 24 February under Section 122. Twenty-four states sued in early March, and spice importer Burlap & Barrel and toy maker Basic Fun filed their own suit a week later. They were two suits, not one, but the facts are right. The trade court ruled for the businesses and Washington state on 7 May.
