Zoox Robotaxi Launches Ride-Hailing in Las Vegas and San Francisco
Amazon-backed Zoox launches bidirectional robotaxi ride-hailing in Las Vegas and San Francisco.

Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020. Today, Zoox offers ride‑hailing services in Las Vegas and San Francisco with vehicles designed specifically for autonomous operation.
A robotaxi is not a car and has different requirements than a human‑driven vehicle, according to Zoox design director Chris Stoffel. The system relies on multiple sensors mounted on elevated ledges to achieve 360-degree situational awareness and optimize coverage without the constraints of a traditional front hood.
The bidirectional, symmetrical design allows the robotaxi to move in either direction without performing a three-point turn, granting it superior agility in dense traffic. This purpose-built approach, distinct from retrofitted models, enables the vehicle to crab walk more effectively and navigate complex urban environments on demand.
What to watch next is how this specialized architecture performs under varying city conditions and scales across additional markets.
