Disinformation campaigns targeting wind energy in Europe could cost the continent up to €1.6 trillion by 2050, a new report warns. These campaigns risk delaying crucial renewable energy projects and undermining European energy security.

Europe’s push for wind energy faces significant challenges from widespread disinformation. This online activity threatens to impede the continent’s transition to renewable sources, impacting both economic stability and energy independence.

Anti-wind actors generated over 40,000 social media posts, resulting in 6.3 million engagements and tens of millions of views over 1.5 years, according to findings by CASM Technology. These efforts spread false narratives, impacting public perception and project timelines across the continent.

European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, stated that wind power represents an economic advantage and a security pillar for Europe. He emphasized that disinformation must not delay the expansion of renewable energy. This perspective highlights the strategic importance of wind power development.

Failure to achieve high wind energy shares could cost Europe up to €1.6 trillion by 2050. This financial risk underscores the economic consequences tied to the spread of misinformation and its potential to slow energy transition efforts. Monitoring how European institutions and member states address these disinformation tactics will be crucial moving forward.
