Bremen outscored the territory: 3-1 over Leipzig despite 71% possession against

Werder Bremen beat RB Leipzig 3-1 at the Weserstadion on Saturday, a result shaped less by shape than by what each side did with the ball. Leipzig kept pressing. Antonio Nusa and Christopher Nkunku made way at 84 for Andrija Maksimovic and Samba Konaté. The breakthrough came in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Maksimovic's delivery was headed home by Ridle Baku. The xG on the header was 0.33, by some distance Leipzig's most likely chance of the day. It was too late and too isolated.

Bremen's two-goal margin was built on chance conversion, not chance creation. Dinkçi scored from a 0.64 xG chance, a finishing rate broadly in line with expectation. Füllkrug scored from a 0.02 xG chance, a finishing rate well above it. Grüll scored from a 0.06 xG chance, again well above expectation. Across their three goals Bremen accumulated 0.72 xG of chance quality and scored three times, a clinical return driven by the second and third strikes rather than the first.

Grüll finished with a goal, 0.15 xG on his own account, and two shots on target. Baku's consolation brought his xG to 0.45, the highest individual total of the day, but arrived when the contest was already settled. Füllkrug's first Werder Bremen goal since returning to the club gave the home supporters the moment the afternoon had been building toward. Chuki, who assisted Dinkçi after four minutes, left to applause rather than relief at 83 minutes.

Leipzig's structure, a 4-3-3 that produced 612 accurate passes at 89% completion, kept the ball moving but did not move the scoreboard. Bremen's 4-2-3-1, with 208 accurate passes at 72%, did less with possession and more with territory. The visitors won the second-half duel count 31-31 after losing it 26-14 in the first half. Daniel Thioune's side bounced back from their opening-weekend defeat at Freiburg with a result that will not flatter them on the underlying numbers and will not bother them either.
