UNESCO Launches AI Education Observatory for Latin America Amid Learning Crisis

UNESCO established this new observatory to provide a coordinated framework, ensuring that AI integration into schools benefits all students.

The Observatory on AI in Education for Latin America and the Caribbean officially launched on April 14. This launch responds to a critical educational landscape. Across Latin America, 60% of sixth-grade students do not achieve minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics, according to recent assessments. This figure highlights the urgent need for new strategies to improve learning outcomes.

Esther Kuisch Laroche, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Santiago, articulated the region's position. She stated that AI is undeniably transforming education throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Kuisch Laroche emphasized the challenge lies in ensuring AI creates more and better opportunities for everyone. She called for urgent, ethical, and pedagogical action to strengthen learning, support educators, and close existing educational gaps.
