UK Sport adds £1.4 million to climbing, the biggest single boost for the sport
Climbing receives a 60% funding boost from UK Sport, expanding athlete support and aiming for medals at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
TL;DR
UK Sport has increased climbing’s budget by £1.4 million – a rise of more than 60% – to fund additional athletes and support services before the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
The £1.4 million uplift makes climbing the largest single beneficiary among 16 sports sharing £4 million of extra funding. The money will allow eight more climbers to join the performance programme and help the sport adapt to three new Olympic medal events slated for LA 2028.
Toby Roberts, 19, won Great Britain’s first Olympic climbing medal – gold in the boulder‑and‑lead event – at Paris 2024. His victory sparked a surge in participation and the launch of the Pro Climbing League earlier this year.
Dr Laura Needham, performance director of the British Mountaineering Council, said the funding will expand psychology, nutrition, physiotherapy and medical provision for athletes. She stressed that integrating these services is essential for the GB climbing team to maximise its potential on the world stage.
UK Sport’s overall investment for the LA 2028 cycle reaches almost £334 million across Olympic and Paralympic disciplines. The agency’s strategy targets emerging medal opportunities, changes in qualification rules and the introduction of new sports. Alongside climbing, canoeing, lacrosse and several para‑disciplines also received modest uplifts.
The additional resources arrive at a critical juncture. With three climbing events now on the Olympic programme, Britain aims to build on Roberts’ breakthrough and translate the sport’s growing domestic base into podium finishes.
What to watch next: Selection of the expanded climbing squad and the rollout of enhanced support services will indicate how effectively the funding translates into performance at the 2028 Games.
