Ugandan and Congolese forces recently freed at least 200 civilians from captivity by the ISIL-linked Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The rescue occurred amidst intensified joint military operations against the militant group.

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) originated in Uganda in 1994, later relocating to eastern DRC. This group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIL) a decade ago, becoming a prominent threat in the region.

The ADF has conducted numerous attacks against civilians, leading to widespread displacement and casualties. Their activities have continued despite ongoing military interventions in the area.

Last week, Ugandan and Congolese troops rescued at least 200 civilians held by the ADF along the River Epulu. This operation was part of a sustained offensive targeting ADF positions.

Those freed from captivity reported severe conditions. Accounts included a lack of food, forced labor, and punishment for non-compliance. Many appeared frail and suffered from untreated illnesses.

Earlier this month, the ADF killed at least 43 people in a separate attack, highlighting the group's continued violence. Joint Ugandan-DRC military operations have intensified since the start of the year, overrunning a major ADF camp in February and improving local security.

The rescue marks a significant tactical success for the joint forces against the ADF. It underscores the ongoing challenges in securing eastern DRC, a region grappling with multiple armed groups.

The continued presence and activity of the ISIL-linked ADF necessitate sustained military pressure and humanitarian aid for affected populations. Watch for further reports on the welfare of the rescued civilians and the long-term impact of these joint military operations on regional stability.
