Trabzonspor produced a ruthless attacking performance to sweep aside Gençlerbirliği 5-0 at Papara Park, the scoreline reflecting a match in which the hosts generated 3.21 expected goals and carved out eight big chances. Paul Onuachu led the charge with two goals in the opening 22 minutes, while Mohamed Salah converted a penalty and added an assist for Ernest Muçi’s second-half strike. Franculino completed the rout late on as Şenol Güneş’s side moved through the gears in a 4-3-3 that consistently unpicked Gençlerbirliği’s 4-1-4-1 structure.

First-half blitz sets the tone

The game was effectively decided inside the first half-hour. Onuachu opened the scoring in the fifth minute, rising above the defence to head home Aral Simsir’s cross — a finish worth just 0.23 xG but emblematic of the aerial threat Trabzonspor posed. Nine minutes later, Salah doubled the lead from the spot after a foul in the box, his penalty carrying 0.79 xG. Onuachu then made it three in the 22nd minute, collecting Wagner Pina’s pass and drilling a right-footed shot past the goalkeeper for his second of the afternoon (0.45 xG).

Gençlerbirliği, despite holding a marginal possession edge (52% in the first half), offered little in response. Their 4-1-4-1 sat deep but lacked compactness between lines, allowing Trabzonspor’s midfield trio to dictate tempo and feed the front three. The visitors managed eight shots before the break but only four on target, accumulating just 0.43 xG — 0.37 from open play. Trabzonspor, by contrast, posted 2.30 xG in the opening 45 minutes, five big chances and 13 shots, six on target.

Second-half control and further punishment

The second half saw Trabzonspor ease off the gas without relinquishing control. Possession evened out at 50-50, but the hosts continued to create the clearer openings. Muçi added a fourth in the 59th minute, finishing a right-footed effort (0.12 xG) after Salah’s lay-off — the Egyptian’s second direct goal involvement of the match. Franculino then capped the scoring in the 78th minute with a left-footed strike (0.30 xG) that owed nothing to a set-piece situation.

Gençlerbirliği’s xG actually rose slightly in the second half (0.43) thanks to 0.35 from set plays, but they mustered only two shots on target across the final 45 minutes. Trabzonspor’s 0.90 second-half xG came almost entirely from open play (0.83), underscoring their ability to manufacture chances in transition and through sustained pressure. The hosts finished with 23 shots to 14, 13 on target to six, and a 41-22 advantage in touches inside the opposition box.

Paul Onuachu 5–0 Mohamed Salah. Touches 8 to 57. Chances created 0 to 6. Shots 2 to 2. xG 0.69 to 0.83. Rating 8.70 to 8.71.

Onuachu and Salah spearhead clinical edge

Onuachu’s brace took his tally to two goals from 0.69 xG, a return that highlights both his finishing and the quality of service he received. Simsir and Pina each registered an assist, while Salah’s goal and assist gave him 0.83 xG on the day — the highest single-player figure in the match. Muçi’s 0.28 xG yielded a goal, and Franculino’s 0.30 xG (from open play) also found the net. Across the front line, Trabzonspor converted five of their eight big chances, a 62.5% conversion rate that turned a dominant performance into a statement result.

Gençlerbirliği’s defensive shape, nominally a 4-1-4-1, was repeatedly breached by diagonal runs and quick combinations down the flanks. Their single big chance — the only one they managed all game — came late and went begging. With 12 fouls each and three yellow cards for the hosts, the match remained disciplined, but the gulf in attacking execution was stark.
