Meta will lay off approximately 8,000 employees next month, pivoting its strategy to focus on artificial intelligence development. This move contributes to over 73,000 tech worker layoffs recorded this year, signaling a broad industry shift towards AI.

Meta announced plans to lay off approximately 8,000 employees next month, shifting its strategic focus towards artificial intelligence (AI) projects. This decision initiates the first phase of significant workforce reductions starting May 20. The move signals a wider trend across the technology sector in the United Kingdom and globally.

This year, over 73,000 tech workers have lost their jobs as companies restructure operations and investment priorities. Amazon previously announced it would cut 16,000 positions. These job cuts underscore a collective industry pivot toward AI and automation.

Beyond these figures, other major tech firms have also reduced workforces to prioritize AI capabilities. Pinterest cut 15% of its staff, for instance, to allocate more resources to building AI tools. Similarly, Dow, Inc. eliminated 4,500 jobs, explicitly citing a shift towards artificial intelligence and automation. Snap, Inc. also removed 1,000 roles, with its CEO stating the restructuring aims to improve efficiency and leverage AI advances. Oracle initiated mass layoffs to mitigate spending on AI infrastructure, while Atlassian reduced its staff by around 1,600, or 10% of its workforce, to focus more on AI-driven development.

These widespread workforce reductions reflect a growing industry confidence in AI's capacity to perform tasks traditionally handled by humans. Companies are redirecting significant financial investments into advanced AI systems, including large language models — computer programs trained on vast amounts of text to generate human-like language — to automate processes and drive future growth. This strategic realignment aims to free up capital for AI-related research, development, and new specialized teams, with some firms indicating a willingness to absorb employee turnover as an acceptable cost.

The tech sector's continued reorientation towards AI will shape future employment landscapes and product development, warranting close observation. The impact on skilled labour and innovation merits ongoing analysis.
