Sudan Accuses Ethiopia of Drone Strikes, Recalls Ambassador Amid Rising Tensions
Sudan alleges Ethiopian drones hit Khartoum, recalls its ambassador and threatens retaliation as diplomatic tensions rise.

TL;DR: Sudan says Ethiopian drones struck Khartoum, recalls its ambassador and warns of retaliation, while Ethiopia denies involvement and summons Sudan’s envoy.
Sudan’s military announced that drones launched from Ethiopia’s Bahir Dar Airport hit targets in the capital, Khartoum. The claim marks the latest escalation in a relationship already strained by disputes over the El Fashaga border and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
In response, Khartoum recalled its ambassador to Addis Ababa for consultations and warned it could exercise its right to retaliate. The move signals a shift from diplomatic protest to the possibility of direct action.
Ethiopia’s foreign ministry summoned Sudan’s ambassador, Al‑Zein Ibrahim Hussein, for clarification. Addis Ababa reiterated a stance of neutrality in Sudan’s internal conflict and highlighted Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s mediation efforts.
The accusations arrive as Sudan battles civil war factions across Darfur, Kordofan and the Blue Nile. Some Sudanese analysts caution that opening a second front could overextend the country’s already depleted resources. They note Ethiopia’s mountainous terrain offers a defensive advantage, while Sudan’s flat plains host critical infrastructure such as the Roseires and Khashm El Girba dams.
International law experts argue that Sudan must first lodge a formal complaint with the UN Security Council and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council before any military response. The legal route underscores the seriousness of alleging external aggression.
Both governments now face pressure to contain the dispute through diplomatic channels. Continued accusations risk spilling into a broader regional power struggle, potentially affecting water security linked to the Renaissance Dam.
Watch for any UN or African Union statements and whether either side escalates to military action or returns to direct negotiations.
