TL;DR: The San Ramon City Council will vote May 26 on whether to keep raising the LGBTQ Pride Flag each June or change how commemorative flags are approved. More than 20 residents spoke in favor of the current practice at the April 28 meeting.

The council’s discussion stems from a policy review triggered by objections from one councilmember and three residents last month. Those objections questioned the annual display of the Pride Flag on the city’s main flagpole. Since then, staff have gathered public input and prepared two alternative approaches for the flag policy.

At the April 28 meeting, over 20 commenters voiced support for continuing the June Pride Flag tradition that began in 2021. Their remarks highlighted the flag’s role in promoting inclusion and visibility for LGBTQ residents. No opposing comments were recorded in the public record for that session.

The council is weighing two options presented by the policy committee. Option one would allow any commemorative flag to remain flying indefinitely unless a councilmember calls for a reconsideration vote. Option two would require each commemorative flag to be reauthorized yearly as a new business item, moving it off the consent calendar.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, where the council will also consider the annual budget, a SEIU contract, and a proposal to set a 10 p.m. end time for council sessions. Staff are asking the council to decide whether to adopt one of the two options or leave the existing policy unchanged.

What it means for residents is that the outcome will determine how often the city must revisit flag displays and whether the Pride Flag will continue to appear each June without further council action. A vote in favor of the perpetual option would lock in the current practice unless a future councilmember objects. Choosing annual reauthorization would add a regular review step but keep the flag’s display subject to yearly approval.

Watch for the council’s decision on May 26 and any subsequent changes to the city’s commemorative flag policy.
