A rescued humpback calf nicknamed Timmy was fitted with a GPS tracker and released off Denmark on Saturday, heading north toward the Arctic.
Timmy, a humpback whale calf, first appeared near Germany’s Baltic Sea coast on March 3 and repeatedly stranded in shallow waters, prompting concern over its health.
After weeks of unsuccessful attempts using inflatable cushions and pontoons, German authorities approved a private rescue effort that moved the animal in a water‑filled barge to Denmark.
The International Whaling Commission warned that each additional stranding made survival chances negligible, underscoring the urgency of the operation.
Rescuers attached a GPS transmitter to Timmy before his release, enabling satellite‑based tracking of his movements.
The calf was set free off the Danish coast on a Saturday, swimming away from the barge into open water.
Karin Walter‑Mommert, a private financier, said the whale appeared to be swimming freely and should now follow the Norwegian coast toward the Arctic.
The GPS tag is set to broadcast its location to satellites roughly every two hours, giving researchers a near‑real‑time map of the calf’s path.
Researchers will watch for any deviation from the northward route, which could indicate health issues or environmental obstacles.
The first data point is expected within the next two hours, revealing whether Timmy stays on the projected northward track toward Arctic waters.
