Red Bull has secured only 16 points after the 2026 Formula 1 season's first three races, placing them significantly behind frontrunner Mercedes, who holds 135 points. This marks a difficult start for the former championship contender under new regulatory conditions.
The 2026 Formula 1 season introduced new technical regulations, often resetting team dynamics across the grid. Red Bull, a team that has challenged for the Drivers' Championship in recent years, appears to have faced significant hurdles in adapting their car to these changes. The team currently ranks sixth in the Constructors' Championship, even trailing midfield competitors like Haas and Alpine.
After three Grand Prix events, Red Bull's total stands at a mere 16 points. This performance contrasts sharply with Mercedes, who leads the constructors' standings—a team competition—with 135 points. This creates a substantial 119-point deficit between the two teams. Driver Max Verstappen, expressing the team's current position, stated that an eighth-place finish, his result in Suzuka, is "not really where we want to fight."
Red Bull has encountered reliability issues, including engine trouble that led to retirements for both drivers in earlier rounds, and challenges with car setup. The team is now tasked with simultaneous development of both their new power unit, or engine, and the chassis. This dual focus adds complexity to improving performance and reliability. The coming races will show whether Red Bull can close this substantial performance gap through strategic development.
