Police warn of ongoing paramilitary threat after Belfast-area car bomb injures none

The blast occurred shortly after 10:50 p.m. when a delivery driver was forced at gunpoint to steer the vehicle to the station and abandon it. A gas cylinder device placed in the boot ignited, sending flames and debris across the residential street. Officers evacuated two babies and other residents before the explosion, and no injuries were reported.

Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton said the car had been hijacked in a manner similar to the March incident at Lurgan police station, where a device failed to detonate. He noted that the attack demonstrates "murderous intent and capability" still present within paramilitary groups, requiring ongoing vigilance to protect officers and the community. Investigators treat the event as attempted murder and suspect the New IRA, which claimed responsibility for the Lurgan attempt.

While the device lacked sophistication, its unpredictable construction caused significant damage and highlighted the ease with which dissident groups can target police facilities. Leaders from all major parties condemned the act, reiterating that such violence has no place in post‑Agreement society. Authorities will continue to monitor threats and assess whether the current "substantial" terror threat level needs adjustment.
