Police Officer Among 14 Killed in Benue Herder Attacks
Mobile police officer and 13 civilians killed in Benue State herder attacks across three days. Local leaders accuse government of prioritizing 2027 elections over security.
TL;DR: A police officer and 13 civilians were killed in coordinated herder attacks across Benue State communities over three days. Local leaders say government inaction reflects more concern for upcoming elections than citizen safety.
Fourteen people died across multiple attacks in Benue State's Otukpo and Apa Local Government Areas between Friday and Sunday. A mobile police officer was killed on Saturday while attempting to repel armed herders who invaded the Upu community in Otukpo LGA.
The violence began Friday night when attackers struck Ikobi and Adija communities, killing three people and injuring several others. On Sunday afternoon, gunmen attacked Edikwu-Ankpali in Apa LGA, killing 10 people including women. Rescue teams recovered 10 bodies from the scene as search operations continued for missing residents.
"The attackers came with the intention to massacre our people," said one eyewitness. "Our people should be on their farms, but armed herdsmen are forcing us off our land, and the government has failed to stop their atrocities."
Local residents directly accused officials of prioritizing politics over protection. "The government has not prioritised the safety of our people. All they seem to care about is the 2027 elections while our people are being killed in their homes."
Council chairmen in both LGAs confirmed the attacks and announced additional security deployments. The Police Public Relations Officer was unavailable for comment.
The attacks highlight the ongoing conflict between farming communities and armed herders in Nigeria's Middle Belt, where land disputes have turned deadly for years. Watch whether increased security deployments prevent further incidents or if community demands for protection gain political attention ahead of 2027 elections.
