Police Investigate Midnight Gunmen Attack on OOU Campus, Students Injured

Police in Ogun State have launched an investigation into a midnight attack by over a dozen gunmen on student hostels at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ibogun Campus. The assault injured several students and resulted in the theft of personal items.

More than a dozen armed individuals stormed student hostels at Olabisi Onabanjo University's Ibogun Campus during a midnight attack. The assailants fired intermittently, discharging firearms without specific aim, creating widespread panic among occupants. This incident, reportedly beginning around midnight and extending into the early hours, prompted an immediate law enforcement response.

The late-night assault targeted multiple student residences, with gunmen operating for several minutes without immediate resistance. They broke into rooms, forcing many students to flee. Jinadu Michael Mabayomije, an eyewitness, described the experience as "terrifying." He recounted that "gunmen came in large numbers, shot, broke into rooms, and students ran helter-skelter without knowing where to hide."

During the chaos, several students sustained injuries while attempting to escape or resist the attackers. The assailants stripped others of their personal belongings, carting away mobile phones, laptops, and other valuables. Reports indicated the presence of bloodstains on walls and floors in one affected hostel, underscoring the physical impact on victims.

The Ogun State Police Command has swiftly deployed personnel to the scene. The Divisional Police Officer for Ibogun and the Area Commander are currently assessing the situation and working to ensure the safety of students and community residents. This investigation aims to identify the perpetrators and address the security lapse on university grounds. The outcome of these police efforts will determine immediate security enhancements and inform broader strategies for protecting educational institutions in the region.
