Met Police Probe Possible Iranian‑Backed Arson Campaign Targeting London Synagogues

A series of arson attacks in London, primarily targeting synagogues and other Jewish properties, now prompts a high-level investigation into potential foreign state backing. Authorities are closely examining claims of Iranian involvement. These incidents follow a period of heightened concern for British Jewish communities.

Since March 23, London has experienced six separate arson attacks. In response, police have arrested fifteen individuals in connection with these incidents. Targets include multiple synagogues and at least one premises linked to Iranian dissidents.

Met Police Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes described the situation as "extraordinary and troubling." He stated authorities will "look incredibly closely at whether those claims stand up," referring to allegations of Iranian involvement. Jukes emphasized the serious implications of a foreign state potentially using criminal proxies to create discord.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the actions unequivocally. "This is abhorrent and it will not be tolerated," he stated. "Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain."

Investigators suspect some attacks were planned weeks in advance, involving reconnaissance of targets. Perpetrators may have received online recruitment and directions. Videos purporting to show some of the attacks, including one on a Harrow synagogue, have circulated on Telegram. These are attributed to the group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, which has also claimed similar incidents in North Macedonia and Germany.

The suspected foreign state connection has elevated the investigation to counter-terrorism policing. This involves efforts to identify both the individuals executing the attacks and those directing them from abroad. Such state-backed criminal activity marks a concerning development in UK security.

The ongoing investigation will focus on uncovering the full network behind these acts. Authorities will also assess how the UK government will address potential state-sponsored aggression within its borders.
