Paris FC 5-4-1 stifles Marseille, Sinayoko double

Lassine Sinayoko scores twice as Paris FC's low block neutralises Marseille's possession in Ligue 1 clash at the Vélodrome.

Marseille and Paris FC named their starting XIs with clear tactical intent. Roberto De Zerbi’s side lined up in a 4-2-3-1, looking to control the ball through a double pivot and an advanced creative trio behind Amine Gouiri. Paris FC, by contrast, settled into a 5-4-1 that drops four midfielders in front of a five-man defence, leaving a lone forward to hunt transitions. The shape is designed to compress central space and force attacks wide, where they can be more easily contained.

The early exchanges validated the visitors’ plan. Lassine Sinayoko opened the scoring inside the first minute, converting a left-footed finish after Luca Koleosho’s cutback. Marseille responded quickly — Gouiri levelled in the eighth minute with a right-footed strike — but Paris FC’s set-piece threat restored their advantage. Possession without penetration

Marseille dominated the ball (67% possession) and completed 250 passes at 93% accuracy, yet their expected goals (0.77) barely edged Paris FC’s 0.72. The home side’s 142 opposition-half passes yielded only eight touches in the box, while the visitors managed nine on just 16 such passes. The discrepancy underscores how effectively the 5-4-1 squeezed shooting opportunities: Marseille’s open-play xG (0.76) dwarfed their set-play return (0.01), while Paris FC generated 0.28 xG from dead balls alone.

Tight-space struggle

Six Marseille players found themselves starved of room against the compact block. Nayef Aguerd (50 touches, 95.7% pass accuracy) and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (48 touches, 97.7%) circulated safely but could not advance the ball into dangerous areas. Amine Harit was dispossessed twice and completed just 69.2% of his passes, while Gouiri managed only 11 touches at 62.5% accuracy. The visitors’ structure forced Marseille’s creative hub into low-percentage actions, reflected in a combined 3-3 shots-on-target tally despite the possession gulf.

Paris FC’s early efficiency — two goals from 0.64 xG for Sinayoko — has handed them a lead that their defensive shape is built to protect. Marseille must now find a way to break a low block that has already turned territorial dominance into a scoreline deficit.
