A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off northern Japan, initiating a tsunami warning for waves up to 3 metres. Officials immediately advised residents in affected coastal areas to evacuate.

On Monday at 4:53 PM local time (07:53 GMT), a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred off Japan's Pacific coast near Iwate prefecture. An earthquake's magnitude measures the energy released, with 7.5 indicating a powerful seismic event capable of widespread impact.

The tremor, strong enough to shake buildings hundreds of kilometers away in Tokyo, immediately triggered a tsunami warning. A tsunami, a series of powerful ocean waves, forms from large-scale disturbances like undersea earthquakes and can cause significant coastal flooding. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a warning for waves up to 3 metres high, urging immediate action.

Following the event, the JMA urged immediate evacuation from coastal and riverside areas to higher ground or designated evacuation buildings. This directive came with the understanding that initial tsunami waves could reach parts of the northern coastline swiftly.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reinforced these directives, advising all residents in warned areas to evacuate to safer, higher locations. The government swiftly established a crisis management team to manage the response.

Japan sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' a region responsible for approximately 18 percent of the world’s seismic activity. This geological position results in about 1,500 earthquakes annually, making advanced seismic monitoring crucial.

This latest event occurs in a country frequently impacted by significant seismic activity. The devastating magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami in 2011 resulted in approximately 18,500 fatalities and triggered the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Additionally, authorities have raised concerns regarding the Nankai Trough, an 800-kilometer undersea trench south of Japan, where future strong earthquakes remain a long-term risk.

Officials are currently assessing potential casualties and property damage. Live footage from public broadcaster NHK, however, showed no immediate visible damage at several Iwate ports in the initial hours.

The immediate concern centers on the full extent of the tsunami's impact, the potential for aftershocks, and any resultant damage to infrastructure or loss of life. Authorities will continue extensive monitoring for further seismic activity and assess the long-term implications for the region's resilience and preparedness.
