Lib Dems Offer £5,000 Rewards for Fly‑Tipping Tip‑Offs

The Liberal Democrats outlined a plan to pay up to £5,000 for information leading to the prosecution of individuals illegally dumping waste, commonly known as fly-tipping. This proposal addresses a persistent environmental and financial problem; fly-tipping incidents in England rose 9% to 1.26 million last year, with large-scale clear-ups costing councils an estimated £19.3 million.

Under the party's scheme, citizens could receive cash rewards for providing intelligence that results in a successful prosecution. This aims to incentivise public reporting and directly assist council enforcement officers in their efforts against environmental offenders.

The Lib Dems also propose a substantial increase to the minimum fine for fly-tipping. Their plan suggests raising this fine to £2,500, which is approximately five times the current average fine of £539. This aims to establish a stronger financial deterrent for illegal waste disposal.
