Kensington Gardens Reopens After Police Find No Hazard in Items Linked to Embassy Drone Threat

Kensington Gardens has reopened in London after police found suspicious items near the Israeli embassy to be non-hazardous. The incident followed an online video claiming a drone attack with dangerous substances.

Kensington Gardens in London reopened this weekend following a comprehensive police investigation into suspicious items discovered near the Israeli embassy. The incident prompted a significant response from counter-terrorism units, deploying specialists including divers from the Met’s underwater search team and dogs from the London Fire Brigade to the area around the Round Pond.

This extensive police activity occurred after an online video circulated, depicting a group claiming to have targeted the Israeli embassy with drones carrying dangerous substances. The video reportedly showed a target superimposed over an image of the embassy and individuals in hazmat suits operating drones.

Metropolitan Police assessed the items found, which included two jars containing a powdered substance, near the bandstand in Kensington Gardens. Authorities determined these substances were not harmful or hazardous. Commander Helen Flanagan of Counter Terrorism Policing London addressed public concerns directly, stating, "We recognise this incident and consequent police activity may have caused concern among local residents and the wider public. We are grateful to them for their understanding while our work was undertaken."

The online video appears linked to Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia. This group, suspected of being Iran-backed, has previously claimed responsibility for multiple arson attacks in north London. Investigators continue their efforts to determine any potential link between the items discovered in Kensington Gardens and the online video's claims.

While the Israeli embassy itself was not subjected to an attack, police maintain close coordination with its security team to ensure the site remains safe and secure. The incident underscores the ongoing vigilance required against diverse security challenges and the proactive measures taken by authorities to address potential threats promptly.

Monitoring will continue regarding the investigation's findings and any further actions concerning groups making such threats in the capital.
