Japan Passes Bill for PM-Led Intelligence Committee, Enactment Expected by Mid-July

Japan's House of Representatives passed a bill establishing a new Prime Minister-led national intelligence committee. This move aims to centralize information gathering and is expected to become law by mid-July.

Japan's government is restructuring its intelligence apparatus. The new committee seeks to consolidate fragmented intelligence operations under the Prime Minister's direct leadership. This initiative addresses national security concerns and aims to enhance information sharing among various government bodies.

The House of Representatives passed a bill to establish this national intelligence committee, designed to improve information gathering. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara stated the bill will enhance decision-making through better quality and timely information amidst a complex international environment. This committee, chaired by the prime minister, will include nine other Cabinet members, such as the chief Cabinet secretary and foreign minister.

Its secretariat will coordinate intelligence from agencies like the National Police Agency, the Foreign Ministry, and the Defense Ministry. The bill is expected to become law before the current parliamentary session concludes in mid-July.

Centralization of intelligence aims to streamline data flow and improve strategic responses to threats, including economic security and foreign espionage. A supplementary resolution addresses concerns over privacy and political neutrality, stipulating that information on politicians or electoral activities will not be collected for partisan advantage. This legislative action reflects a broader push to bolster Japan's national security framework.

The upcoming launch of this committee by summer will demonstrate its operational effectiveness in an evolving global landscape.
