How to Apply for a Nigerian International Passport Online
A step-by-step guide to starting your Nigerian passport application on the official NIS portal, booking your appointment and tracking your application.
You apply for a Nigerian international passport online through the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) portal at passport.immigration.gov.ng. You fill in the application, pay the fee online, then visit a passport office in Nigeria for your biometric enrolment. The whole process starts on the website, so you can begin from anywhere with internet access.
What you need
- A National Identification Number (NIN). This is required to complete an application for a new passport or a renewal.
- Access to the NIS passport portal at passport.immigration.gov.ng.
- A passport-size photograph that meets the NIS photo compliance rules, which you can test on the portal before you apply.
- The fee for your chosen booklet type, paid online at the end of your application submission.
Step by step
- Go to passport.immigration.gov.ng.
- Choose the service that matches your situation: Apply for Fresh Passport, Apply for Renewal/Re-issue, or Apply for Correction of Data.
- If you already started an application and did not finish, click Resume/Edit your Application instead of starting again.
- Before you go further, use Check Centre Availability to see the earliest available appointment date for each processing centre.
- Use Test Photo Upload to check that your passport-size photo complies before you proceed with the application.
- Complete the application form and submit it.
- Pay the passport fee online at the end of your application submission.
- Book your appointment for processing your passport application through the Book Appointment link.
- Attend your appointment at the passport office for biometric enrolment.
- Use Application Status/Print Receipt to check your application status or print your receipt at any point.
Things to know
- All citizens of Nigeria by birth, descent, adoption, registration or naturalisation are eligible for a Nigerian passport, provided they satisfy all conditions prescribed by law.
- Citizens by naturalisation, registration, adoption and surrogacy can only process their applications at the NIS Headquarters, Abuja.
- A NIN is required to complete an application for renewal or a new Nigerian passport. If you do not have one, find a NIN centre near you.
- When you register for your NIN, make sure your name is spelt accurately and follows the exact sequence recorded in your current Nigerian passport, that is last name, first name and middle names. All names and spellings must be identical to what is on your existing passport.
- Incorrect spellings or a wrong sequence of names will delay your passport processing. You will need to make the corrections at a NIN centre, and this may require another NIN payment.
- Passport fees are set by the Federal Government of Nigeria and are paid online at the end of your application submission. Prices may change without prior notice, so confirm the current fee on the portal before you pay.
- The NIS accepts all applications online, and the applicant is required to visit a passport office for biometric enrolment.
- If you are applying from outside Nigeria, the application is submitted online and you must book an appointment with a Nigerian Mission for biometric enrolment. The steps above cover applying from within Nigeria.
