Gabriel Kreiman, a neuroscientist who spent two decades mapping brain memory functions at Harvard, launched Engramme last year. This Silicon Valley venture seeks to build AI systems that provide humans with perfect, searchable, and infinite memory. His move from a prestigious academic post highlights a growing trend of researchers transitioning to the private sector for faster technological impact.
Engramme, co-founded with former Harvard Ph.D. student Spandan Madan, is currently in discussions to raise approximately $100 million. This funding round would place the startup's valuation close to $1 billion. Kreiman stated that to augment human memory at scale, he needed to move beyond academia, prompting his decision to establish Engramme in Silicon Valley.
The company's approach differs from typical large language models, which process language, by using algorithms specifically designed to mirror the brain's associative memory formation. Engramme aims to ingest users' digital data, such as emails, conversations, and documents, creating a personalized "memerome," or an index of a person's digital memories. This system would then proactively surface relevant information as needed. For example, it could recall an article read years prior while a user writes a paper.
Kreiman emphasized the personal nature of memories, stating Engramme cannot read users' memories. The platform is designed to give users full control over what data they share. This focus on user autonomy addresses privacy concerns inherent in such a system.
Engramme represents a significant effort to extend human cognitive capabilities through advanced AI.
