Gunman Kills Canadian Tourist, Wounds Six at Teotihuacan Before Suicide
A shooter killed a Canadian woman and injured six at Mexico’s Teotihuacan pyramids before suicide. President Sheinbaum ordered a full investigation.

A gunman shot and killed a Canadian woman and injured six others at the Teotihuacan pyramids near Mexico City before killing himself.
Teotihuacan, a major pre‑Hispanic archaeological site just outside the capital, draws thousands of visitors each year. The attack occurred less than two months before Mexico co‑hosts the FIFA World Cup with the United States and Canada, a period when security scrutiny is heightened.
The gunman opened fire on Monday, striking the Canadian woman fatally and wounding six additional people. Local officials said four of the injured were hit by gunfire while two suffered injuries from falls during the chaos. The shooter then died from a self‑inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.
President Claudia Sheinbaum announced she had directed the Security Cabinet—the body that coordinates national safety policy—to conduct a thorough investigation and provide all necessary assistance. Governor Delfina Gomez Alvarez confirmed that state security personnel remain on site and that care is being given to the victims. The federal government also said it is in contact with the Canadian embassy regarding the incident.
The violence adds to a series of security concerns in Mexico that surfaced after February’s clashes linked to the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes. Tourism officials warn that such events could affect visitor confidence, especially with the World Cup approaching.
Investigators will examine the shooter’s motive and any possible links to organized crime. Travel advisories and security measures at major archaeological sites will be watched closely in the coming weeks.
