At Middle Tennessee State University, Big Machine Records chief Scott Borchetta warned graduates that AI would render early coursework obsolete, urging them to “listen now or pay later.” The remarks sparked a chorus of boos, echoing similar reactions at the University of Central Florida, the University of Arizona and other campuses where tech leaders compared AI’s impact to past revolutions.

A recent NBC News poll of 1,000 registered voters found just 26 % view AI positively while 46 % hold a negative opinion. The same sentiment appears among younger Americans; a 2025 Harvard survey reported a majority of U.S. youth see AI as a threat to their career prospects. These figures place AI below figures for ICE, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in public favor, though still ahead of the Democratic Party and Iran.

Borchetta’s speech highlighted the disconnect. He told graduates, “You can hear me now or you can pay me later… it’s a tool. Make it work for you.” Graduates like Jacob Pagel, a political‑science major, described the message as “a knife to the chest,” arguing that years of specialized study now feel devalued. Pagel, who is considering a career in child health advocacy or politics, warned that AI‑generated campaign ads represent a “cheap route” that cannot replace human interaction.

Academic experts note the pattern. Cornell professor Sarah Kreps says students are “a mouthpiece for the population at large,” reflecting widespread unease about a technology that already fuels layoffs and community protests against data‑center construction. Financial stress compounds the anxiety; a 2026 Trellis Strategies report found nearly half of college students struggle to focus on coursework due to money worries.

Public‑relations professionals label the speeches a preventable disaster. Parry Headrick of Crackle PR argues executives missed an opportunity to acknowledge student concerns and instead doubled down on hype, further alienating a demographic already burdened by rising living costs.

The backlash signals a growing gap between corporate optimism about AI and the lived reality of recent graduates entering a tight job market.
