A brief technical fault halted casting on first‑generation Chromecasts earlier this week; Google has now resolved the issue and confirmed it will cease support for all older Chromecast models except the 2022 Chromecast with Google TV (HD).

Google’s original Chromecast, launched in 2013, sold 10 million units in 2014 and became a staple for streaming content to non‑smart TVs. The device’s simplicity—press “Cast” in an app and stream to the TV—kept it in use long after newer models appeared.

Early this week, users reported that the first‑gen Chromecast stopped working with apps such as Chrome, YouTube, and Paramount+. A Reddit thread suggested the devices had been deliberately disabled, sparking speculation about a forced upgrade.

Sahana Mysore, senior product manager for Google Home, clarified the situation: a temporary technical issue disrupted casting for some first‑gen users, the team identified the root cause, and the problem is now resolved. Mysore confirmed that all affected devices should be functional again.

In a separate announcement, Google declared it will end support for every Chromecast model except the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) released in 2022. The support page still lists all models other than the first‑gen device as receiving critical security updates, but the broader statement signals the end of software and security updates for legacy hardware.

The glitch highlights the risks of relying on aging streaming hardware. While the immediate problem appears fixed, owners of unsupported models will no longer receive security patches, leaving them vulnerable to exploits. Users may need to replace older units with the newer Chromecast with Google TV (HD) or alternative streaming sticks.

Watch for Google’s next update on whether any additional legacy devices will receive extended support or if a migration program will be offered to ease the transition.
