Montgomery County will host a free forum on May 28 to discuss how social connections boost senior health.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place. The Commission on Aging organizes the forum, and on‑site registration opens at 8:30 a.m.; advance sign‑up is encouraged via Eventbrite.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said the county aims to build a connected, supportive community for older adults and urged seniors to attend. He stressed that strong relationships with neighbors, friends, and groups improve health, resilience, and community participation.

Research shows that older adults with meaningful social ties experience lower rates of heart disease and cognitive decline and are more likely to engage in preventive care, attend medical appointments, and follow treatment plans. The evidence comes from multiple cohort studies and meta‑analyses that track participants over time, though these designs show association rather than proving causation.

For attendees, the forum will feature expert talks, interactive discussions, and displays of community programs that reduce isolation, such as technology training and volunteer partnerships. Practical takeaways include checking local senior centers for activity groups and using simple video‑call tools to stay in touch with family.

Watch for the county’s follow‑up report on policy recommendations expected later this summer.
