El-Sayed Clinches Michigan Democratic Senate Primary, Faces Rogers in November

Abdul El‑Sayed won the Democratic primary for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat, beating incumbent Representative Haley Stevens.

The Associated Press called the race Wednesday morning after Stevens’s campaign said she had called El‑Sayed to concede.

El‑Sayed prevailed by a relatively close margin, reflecting that battleground‑state voters are still weighing the party’s future direction.

He will now face Republican Mike Rogers in the general election for a seat that Democrats view as vital to regaining Senate control.

If victorious in November, El‑Sayed would become the first Muslim to serve in the U.S. Senate.

El‑Sayed received backing from progressive leaders such as Bernie Sanders, while Stevens drew support from establishment figures including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The race attracted tens of millions of dollars in outside spending, with El‑Sayed saying the funds were aimed at defeating him.
