Chulalongkorn University students secured a 150,000 baht grant to develop cat dental gummies, repurposing quail eggshells and natural extracts for feline oral health. This innovation targets the growing pet care market, offering a new solution for managing plaque and bad breath in cats.

Feline oral health poses a challenge for many pet owners, as cats often resist traditional toothbrushing. Innovations in pet care are emerging to address this, focusing on palatable and effective alternatives for dental hygiene.

A team of Chulalongkorn University students received a 150,000 baht grant from the TED Youth Startup Fund–IDEATION Program, administered by CU Innovation Hub. This funding supports their project to create a novel cat dental gummy. The grant facilitates development of a product designed to integrate oral care into a cat’s natural chewing behavior.

The cat dental gummy incorporates several active ingredients. It features bio-calcium, derived from otherwise discarded quail eggshells, which offers a sustainable raw material source. Papain, an enzyme extracted from papaya, works to break down protein-based plaque. Peppermint leaf extract is also included for its antibacterial properties and ability to reduce oral odor. These components aim to provide a comprehensive approach to feline dental hygiene.

A key innovation involves 'Triple Encapsulation' technology. This delivery system allows the active ingredients to be released gradually, coating teeth over an extended period rather than all at once. This mechanism enhances the ingredients' effectiveness by ensuring prolonged contact with the tooth surface.

The broader pet care market, expanding at approximately 15% annually, offers significant opportunities for such health solutions. This growth highlights a demand for effective and convenient products that address common pet health issues. The students' project aims to meet this demand while also repurposing agricultural waste, creating value from quail eggshells.

The team plans to develop prototypes, conduct user testing, and establish distribution channels. Acceptance by cats, known for their selective tastes, will be a critical factor. Watch for further developments in this intersection of agricultural waste repurposing and pet health innovation.
