Labour MP Catherine West will try to trigger a leadership contest if no cabinet minister challenges Sir Keir Starmer by Monday, saying she can rally the 81 MPs required.

Catherine West, a former junior Foreign Office minister, warned the Labour cabinet on BBC Radio 4 that she will move to force a leadership vote unless a minister steps forward this week. She framed the demand as a “notice” to the cabinet, urging them to reshuffle and present a stronger communicator for the party.

To launch a contest, West must secure the support of 81 Labour MPs – exactly 20 % of the parliamentary party. She told the programme she already has ten MPs ready to back her and expressed confidence that more will join before the deadline.

West’s preferred scenario is a cabinet‑led reshuffle that moves Sir Keir into a different role, possibly an international post, while a new figure takes the party’s public face. She declined to name a successor, noting that several potential candidates have been preparing for months but have not yet announced their intentions.

Cabinet Office Minister Nick Thomas‑Symonds cautioned colleagues, warning that frequent leadership changes generate instability and distract from policy delivery. Immigration Minister Mike Tapp echoed the concern, suggesting internal turmoil benefits rival Reform UK.

The call comes after Labour’s heavy losses in English council elections, where the party surrendered more than 1,460 seats, and historic defeats in Wales and Scotland. Around 30 MPs have publicly called for a timetable for Starling’s departure, while the prime minister plans a major speech and new legislative programme to reset his premiership.

If West can muster the required 81 signatures, a leadership contest would be triggered, forcing the party into a potentially divisive internal battle. Failure to reach the threshold could consolidate Starmer’s position, as backbench frustration may coalesce around the incumbent.

The next day will reveal whether West’s challenge gains momentum or stalls, setting the tone for Labour’s response to recent electoral setbacks.
