Catherine West’s bid to challenge Sir Keir Starmer lacks the required MP support, leaving the leadership challenge unlikely to proceed.

Labour rules state that a leadership challenge needs backing from at least 20% of the parliamentary party, which equals 81 MPs. West announced her intention after a Radio 4 interview, saying she had the support of only 10 colleagues. That leaves her 71 short of the threshold.

Reaction across Westminster has been mixed. Some MPs described her move as unexpected, while others said they had seen signals in private messages. A veteran Labour figure warned that nobody can defeat Andy Burnham, so if the party wants a different leader it must act swiftly.

The low level of support means West cannot formally launch a contest. Without the 81 signatures, Starmer can argue there is no appetite for a challenge and continue toward the next election. Meanwhile, Burnham’s allies are urging West to abandon her bid and instead push for a timetable that would allow the mayor to return to Parliament.

What to watch next: whether any additional MPs declare support for West in the coming days, and whether Burnham’s camp can secure a agreed exit plan for Starmer before the State Opening of Parliament on Wednesday.
