BFree Secures $3 Million Funding to Expand Ethical Debt Recovery Across Africa
BFree raises $3 million from Verdant Capital to grow its AI‑driven, ethical debt‑recovery platform in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya.

TL;DR: BFree has raised a $3 million debt investment from Verdant Capital Hybrid Fund to grow its AI‑powered, ethical debt‑recovery platform in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya.
Nigeria’s banking sector continues to wrestle with high non‑performing loan (NPL) ratios, which stood at about 5.1% in 2022, tying up capital that could otherwise fund new lending. BFree’s platform uses borrower‑level behavioural data to predict repayment capacity and structure customized, fee‑light collection strategies, aiming to return distressed assets to performing status.
The Lagos‑headquartered startup has already managed over $740 million of troubled loans, reaching 6.6 million borrowers in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya, and works with more than 30 financial institutions ranging from digital lenders to regulated banks. Its model injects liquidity back into banks, letting them refocus on core lending while helping borrowers regain access to formal credit.
Verdant Capital Hybrid Fund, a Johannesburg‑based private‑equity vehicle focused on inclusive finance, provided the $3 million debt facility and will also offer technical assistance to refine BFree’s repayment‑prediction algorithms. The funding will enable the firm to purchase and restructure additional portfolios from African lenders.
Market data shows Nigeria’s NGX All‑Share Index added 0.4% to 52,300 points, while Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO.NG) traded at ₦38.00, up 0.1%, giving it a market cap of roughly $2.6 billion. Kenya’s NSE 20 Share Index (NSE20) rose 0.3% to 1,850 points, and Safaricom (SCOM.N) holds a market cap of about $13.5 billion.
With fresh capital, BFree plans to expand its AI models and ethical‑collection framework into additional West and East African markets, seeking to scale a niche that has historically been hampered by poor data, legal constraints and opaque pricing.
Watch for BFree’s next portfolio acquisitions and any regulatory updates on loan‑transferability rules across the region.
