AMD launches its Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition processor on April 22 for $899. This new chip doubles the L3 cache of its predecessor, delivering incremental performance gains and improved power efficiency.

Processor manufacturers continuously refine designs to boost computational performance. AMD has increasingly leveraged its 3D V-Cache technology to enhance its Ryzen line, integrating larger on-chip memory directly accessible by the CPU (Central Processing Unit) cores. This technology aims to reduce data access latency, thereby accelerating tasks that are sensitive to memory speed, particularly in applications like gaming and complex simulations.

AMD will release the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition on April 22 in the US market. This new processor will carry a list price of $899. The chip features 208MB of total L3 cache, which represents double the cache capacity found in the standard Ryzen 9 9950X3D model. This expanded cache aims to deliver more data to the processing cores faster.

The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 offers slightly better performance when compared directly to the Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Notably, this improved performance occurs while the new model matches or even lowers power consumption during operation. This efficiency is achieved despite the 9950X3D2 operating with a higher Thermal Design Power (TDP) rating of 200 W, an increase from the 9950X3D's 170 W TDP.

The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition integrates 3D V-Cache across both of its 8-core CPU chiplets, a departure from the previous 9950X3D model which applied this high-speed cache to only one chiplet. This architectural choice significantly increases the total available L3 cache, aiming for broader application performance benefits across all cores. While the performance improvements are present and contribute to a smoother user experience, they are incremental rather than groundbreaking when compared to the standard 9950X3D, which generally retails for a lower price point.
