Algeria has taken a structural step towards transforming its technical talent into an industrial asset, inaugurating the nation's first startup cluster for artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity. AI involves developing machines that simulate human intelligence, while cybersecurity focuses on protecting systems and data from digital threats. The launch occurred at the Scientific and Technological Pole "Chahid Abdelhafid-Ihaddaden" in Sidi Abdellah. This initiative was overseen by key ministers from Higher Education, Knowledge Economy, and Post and Telecommunications, highlighting its cross-governmental priority.

This new hub represents a direct effort to bridge the gap between academic research and practical industrial application. Officials state this move signifies a strategic shift from isolated entrepreneurial efforts to structured innovation hubs. These hubs will link universities, research centers, and new firms directly. The institutional mechanism seeks to accelerate innovation cycles and channel scientific output into key productive sectors, including health, agriculture, energy, and digital services. The 87-hectare Abdelhafid Ihaddaden hub already houses four national schools, including the National School of Artificial Intelligence, offering 20,000 educational places and residences for 11,000 students. This established academic base positions the new cluster to leverage existing expertise.

The primary objective of the AI-cybersecurity cluster is to convert student and academic talent into founders and applied technologists. This supports a broader national goal to accelerate a transition toward a digital economy. Algeria currently registers over 7,800 startups, with an ambitious target set to reach 20,000 by 2029. This initiative directly contributes to scaling that pipeline and addressing economic diversification.

This new model intends to foster an environment where research directly fuels economic growth and creates opportunities. Officials indicate the success of this initial cluster could lead to its expansion to other campuses nationwide, with 2027 cited as a benchmark for consolidating knowledge-driven growth.
