Adamawa Clash: 20 Dead, 400 Homes Burned by Suspected Militias
Suspected ethnic militias killed 20 people and destroyed over 400 homes in Kwah and Gyakan communities, Adamawa State, amid persistent regional violence.
Suspected ethnic militias killed at least 20 people and burned over 400 homes in recent attacks on Kwah and Gyakan communities in Nigeria's Adamawa State. These assaults intensify existing violence in a region already under a dusk-to-dawn curfew.
Lamurde Local Government Area in Adamawa State faces persistent insecurity, prompting authorities to enforce a dusk-to-dawn curfew since December. This measure follows reports of hundreds of deaths from ongoing communal violence in the region. These attacks are the latest in a series of clashes, often rooted in land disputes that have plagued the area for nearly three decades. The volatile situation has claimed thousands of lives over time, prompting the Adamawa State Government to establish a commission of inquiry.
Suspected ethnic militias attacked Kwah and Gyakan communities, resulting in multiple casualties and extensive property damage. Carlos Nicodemus, a former Supervisory Councillor in Lamurde LGA, reported 11 immediate fatalities, with 10 occurring in Gyakan and one in Kwah. Attackers also destroyed over 400 houses across both communities. After security personnel arrived, local residents discovered five additional bodies, bringing the total death toll to 20. The attacks highlight the scale of destruction and loss of life in these communities.
The violence exacerbates a volatile situation in Adamawa State, where communal clashes have repeatedly claimed lives and displaced populations. The imposition of a curfew since December underscores the severity of ongoing conflict, yet it failed to prevent these recent large-scale assaults. This indicates significant challenges in maintaining security and protecting civilian populations. Residents face displacement and continued threats to their safety and livelihoods. The incident underscores the urgent need for effective intervention and sustained peace-building efforts in affected areas to address the root causes of the long-standing disputes.
Authorities will continue monitoring the security situation in Lamurde LGA as efforts to restore stability and protect civilians proceed.
