Federal authorities indicted 43 individuals tied to the Mexican Mafia in a broad crackdown across Southern California. This operation led to significant seizures of illegal drugs, weapons, and cash.

A major law enforcement operation targeted the Mexican Mafia, an organized crime group that originated in the 1950s within California's juvenile justice system. This organization expanded to control smuggling, drug distribution, and extortion from inside the state’s prison system.

This recent crackdown focused on Southern California, primarily Orange County, with federal and local agencies executing arrest and search warrants. This coordinated action aims to disrupt the group's extensive criminal network.

Forty-three individuals face federal charges including murder, kidnapping, extortion, operating illegal gambling businesses, and drug trafficking. The indictment alleges one incarcerated leader used contraband cellphones to direct criminal activities from prison.

Authorities seized over 120 pounds of methamphetamine and more than 8 pounds of fentanyl during the operation. Law enforcement also recovered 25 firearms and over $30,000 in cash.

The organization allegedly ran illegal gambling operations in commercial strip malls and private residences, using violence to secure these enterprises. They are also linked to a murder at a gang-controlled motel in Anaheim.

This coordinated effort addresses a significant threat to communities, stemming from gang members involved in murder, extortion, kidnapping, and the trafficking of drugs and firearms. The indictments underscore ongoing efforts to dismantle organized crime networks.

The defendants will begin their initial appearances in federal courts in Los Angeles and Orange counties in the coming days. Future proceedings will reveal further details of the prosecution.
